First, create a new post.

Click the Add Media button in the sidebar and select Images from your library.

Choose whether you’d like to upload images from your computer or Flickr account (the latter will be more flexible). You can also choose whether you want to auto-generate captions for each image as well if you don’t have time/energy for that task. In this example, I’m going with manual captioning because my photos usually contain information about what they are and where they came from; however if someone else wants me to do it for them then sure!

Click on each image individually so that it’s highlighted red. This will allow us see all of them at once when we go back later on down this process post creation steps below—for now just focus on getting organized first!

Upload the images you want to use in your WordPress gallery.

To add images to your gallery, you’ll need to import them from your computer. You can do this by dragging and dropping them into the Media Library or selecting one or more images from a URL in the uploader window.

Once you’ve added all of your images, go ahead and click ‘Create Gallery’. The Create Gallery screen will appear below:

Creating a WordPress image gallery from multiple sources

You can import images from the WordPress media library, upload them directly from your computer, or use a third party image hosting service. If you prefer not to use WordPress for this purpose, there are plugins available that will allow you to add images from social media sites such as Facebook or Instagram.

To begin building your gallery:

Import Images from the Media Library

Add images from the WordPress media library

To add images from the WordPress media library, go to your WordPress dashboard.

Click on “Appearance” in the top menu bar and then click on “Media.”

Click on “Uploads,” which will open a list of all of your uploaded files, including any images you’ve added using drag-and-drop or directly through uploader buttons located throughout each post or page’s editor area (if applicable). You can also see this list by clicking on one of those buttons: it’s usually located at the very top right corner of your screen just above where you type in text!

Define the order of images in your gallery.

Next, you need to define the order of images in your gallery. You can do this by selecting the image you want to move and clicking and dragging it to a new position. If you don’t like how things are organized after moving or re-ordering an image, just click on another one and start over!

Once all your images are where they should be (or at least where they were), save all changes by clicking “Update Gallery.”

Select the size of your images.

When you’re uploading your images, it’s important to choose the size that is appropriate for the purpose of your gallery. The size of an image will affect how easy it is for visitors to view the content on your page and how much bandwidth is required by their browser. If you want high-quality images, then make sure that they are at least 300 pixels wide by 450 pixels tall (or what ever other size/resolution suits).

If you don’t need a lot of space, then go ahead and upload smaller images in a variety of sizes: 320px wide x 480px tall; 180px x 240px; 120px x 160px etcetera.. You can use different resolutions if needed but keep in mind that larger files take more time to load on slower internet speeds!

Configure other gallery settings.

Choose a gallery layout.

Set the image size.

Add captions and descriptions to your images. You can also use these fields to include links in the description or set custom CSS for each image (more on this later).

Set up tags for your photos, which will help you find specific types of content quickly when browsing through your posts and pages. You can add as many tags as you like, but don’t forget that they have limits on how many characters they can be!

Add a caption to each image.

Next, add a caption to each image.

To add a caption, click on the image and then click on the “Caption” button. You can use this same image in multiple galleries, so make sure you don’t forget to include a caption for each one!

You can also assign different captions for each gallery by clicking on the “Edit” button next to each gallery’s name in your Media Manager panel. This will bring up another window where you can edit any aspects of your gallery like its title and description as well as other settings like width/height values etc., which are useful when creating custom layouts using WordPress theme frameworks like Liquid or Genesis Framework (which we’ll cover later).

Link your images to an Attachment Page Media File

Now that you have a theme, it’s time to add some images. First, link your images to an attachment page or media file. This will give readers access to each gallery item when they click on the image itself.

Next, add another element where you can link directly back into your main content area:

Let’s go ahead and create one now:

Images linked to an attachment page are displayed as single items, while media files open directly in the browser.

You can use images from your attachment page on a slideshow or in any other way you see fit.
