What is an XML Sitemap?
An XML sitemap is a file that contains a list of all the pages on your website. It’s an important tool for search engines like Google and Bing to crawl, index and display your website in their results pages.
The purpose of an XML Sitemap is to help search engines like Google crawl and index your site so that it’s easier for visitors to find when searching online!
How to Create a Sitemap in WordPress?
To create a sitemap in WordPress, you can use the Yoast SEO plugin. You will need to install and activate it first. Once done, head over to “Sitemaps” under Settings > Google Sitemaps.
You can choose whether or not to include posts and pages in your XML sitemap by default (which is what I recommend). If you do not want that option checked by default then uncheck it before saving your changes!
1. Install and activate the Yoast SEO plugin.
To install and activate the Yoast SEO plugin, you first need to login to your WordPress dashboard. Then, navigate to Plugins > Add New and search for “Yoast SEO”. Click on Install Now button when it appears in front of you.
Once installed, go to Settings > General in order to configure some options for this plugin such as:
- Sitemap settings (this can be found under SEO tab)
Google Analytics integration (if desired)
2. For Posts and Pages
For posts and pages, post types are your pages by default. You can change this to posts, or you can do both. If you choose to include media attachments in the XML sitemap, be sure to add those as well.
The most important thing about a Sitemap (and why it’s so important) is that it tells Google how search engines like Bing and Yahoo! should crawl your site so that they don’t miss anything important on their crawl algorithm—like internal links or other content on different pages inside one website!
3. include media attachments in the XML sitemap.
You can also add media attachments, such as images and videos, to the sitemap. Media attachments are made up of two parts: the file name and its extension (jpg, jpeg or mp4). Media attachments can be added to the XML sitemap in two ways:
You can use a self-closing tag ( ) within your body tag to add them inline. This will ensure that they are included in each page indexing engine’s search results as well as being indexed by Googlebot’s crawler.* You can also include their filenames within a hidden field on each page so that they are listed automatically when users view them.* Users may choose not to include any additional media files at all by setting their preferences accordingly through WordPress’ Settings > Reading section
4. Your images, as well as change how often they are updated in the sitemap.
You can set a priority for your images, as well. This will determine the order of their appearance on the sitemap. The settings should be configured in this order:
5. You can also set a priority (categories, tags, etc.).
You can also set a priority for your taxonomy archives (categories, tags, etc.). This will determine the order in which they appear on the sitemap. You can set this to be either high or low priority and it will appear above or below other pages that you have created within your site.
You can also set a frequency of updates for each taxonomy archive item that you create on WordPress. If you want to update these items regularly then this is what would be ideal!
6. Save Changes>XML sitemaps button to save your settings.
Once everything has been configured the way you want it, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Save Changes>XML sitemaps button to save your settings.
If you don’t see this option, that means either:
- You have not installed or configured WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin; or
- Your site is not configured correctly for XML sitemaps

An XML Sitemap is a file that contains the URLs of all pages on your website. When Google crawls a site, it downloads this data and uses it to create its index. The more pages there are that Google knows about, the better chance you’ll have of being found when someone searches for information related to what you’re writing about!
To create an XML sitemap:
- Click on “Settings” at the top right corner of your WordPress dashboard menu bar (it might be titled “Appearance” or something similar).
